Electrophoretic coating is a special coating technology, which is one of the most common methods for coating metal workpieces. Electrophoretic coating technology began in 1959 when Ford Motor Company of the United States conducted research on anodic electrophoretic primers for automotive applications, and built the first generation of electrophoretic coating equipment in 1963. Subsequently, the electrophoretic process developed rapidly.
The development of electrophoretic coatings and coating technology in my country has a history of more than 30 years. In 1965, the Shanghai Coatings Research Institute successfully developed anodic electrophoretic coatings: By the 1970s, several anodic electrophoretic coating lines for auto parts had been built in my country’s automobile industry. The first generation of anodic electrophoretic coatings was successfully developed by the 59th Institute in 1979 and was used to a certain extent in military products; subsequently, large and medium-sized paint factories such as Shanghai Paint Institute, Lanzhou Paint Institute, Shenyang, Beijing, and Tianjin developed electrophoretic coatings. The factory is engaged in the development and research of a large number of cathodic electrophoretic coatings. During the Sixth Five-Year Plan period, my country’s paint industry introduced manufacturing technology and painting technology of cathodic electrophoretic paint from Japan, Austria and the United Kingdom. Our country has successively introduced advanced coating technology and coating equipment from the United States, Germany, Italy and other countries. The first modern cathodic electrophoresis coating production line for automobile bodies was put into operation at Changchun FAW Automobile Body Plant in 1986, followed by Hubei Second Automobile Works and Jinan Automobile Body Cathodic Electrophoresis Lines. In my country’s automobile industry, cathodic electrophoretic coating has been used to replace anode electrophoretic coating. By the end of 1999, dozens of production lines have been put into production in my country, and there are more than 5 cathodic electrophoretic coating lines for more than 100,000 vehicles (such as Changchun FAW-Volkswagen Co., Ltd., Shanghai Volkswagen Co., Ltd., Beijing Light Vehicle Co., Ltd., Tianjin Xiali Automobile Co., Ltd., Shanghai Buick Automobile Co., Ltd. and other electrophoresis tank production lines with hundreds of tons) were completed and put into production before 2000. Cathodic electrophoretic paint has accounted for the majority of the automotive coating market, while anodic electrophoretic paint is dynamic in many other areas. Anodic electrophoretic paint is used in truck frames, black painted interior parts and other metal workpieces with low corrosion resistance requirements.
